In reaction to the harsh homeless encampment policies of Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels, homeless individuals and advocates set up camp in 2008 on unused city land in Southwest Seattle. They were quickly evicted and have since been moving to different sites. Their goal throughout has remained the same – a permanent location for this self-operating camp. A series of infograhpics and 2’ x 3’ posters, including a map of Nickelsville’s extensive relocations, were created as part of a guerilla poster campaign. Dozens of posters were fly-posted in an effort to put public pressure on newly elected Mayor McGinn and the Seattle City council to take action. This project was created as part of my graduate thesis work exploring the leveraging power of data visualizations, specifically maps.
